A Day in May — John Martin Gallery, Suffolk

An invitation from John Martin gave me another excuse to take my paints outdoors, this time for A Day in May at his home and gallery in Suffolk. Painting directly from the landscape is still rather unfamiliar territory for someone who normally spends weeks inventing architecture, but that is part of the pleasure. The light changes, the weather refuses to cooperate and decisions have to be made quickly. The resulting studies were included in the summer exhibition, and I was delighted that two found new homes. Many thanks to John for the invitation and for a thoroughly enjoyable change of scene.
