Larger Paintings 2017 – 2024
Over these years I became increasingly interested in making larger and more elaborate paintings, often involving complicated architectural spaces, imagined buildings and the peculiar ways in which people organise their lives. Working on this scale allowed me to bring together numerous small narratives within a single composition, although it also presented some fairly obvious challenges in terms of studio space, time and the practical business of moving the finished paintings around.
Much of this work was made alongside my teaching commitments, so progress could sometimes be painfully slow. Nevertheless, these paintings established many of the ideas and working methods that have continued to occupy me, particularly my fascination with buildings as containers for human activity, memory and the occasional absurdity.
