2021-24 Ghosts in the Garden
Ghosts in the Garden began in May 2021 when I decided to make a drawing every day in our garden as part of the 100 Day Project Scotland. What started as a fairly simple exercise in looking and drawing gradually developed into something rather more involved. Returning to the same familiar patch of ground each day, I became increasingly interested in the changing seasons, the growth and decay of plants, and the traces of previous activity that seem to accumulate in even the most ordinary domestic garden. The drawings became the starting point for a series of paintings and animations in which observation increasingly gave way to invention, memory and imagined events. The garden became a kind of stage, populated by the remnants of everyday life, unexpected visitors and the occasional ghost. Over the following three years, the project developed into a substantial body of work, culminating in my solo exhibition Ghosts in the Garden at the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh in April 2024. This page brings together some of the original drawings, paintings and animations that emerged along the way.
