2025-26 Studios
During 2025 and 2026, I was fortunate to have access to two rather different studio spaces through artist residencies. The first was at the Hugo Burge Foundation at Marchmont House, where I spent a wonderful month of uninterrupted painting in a converted squash court, with the space and freedom to work on several large canvases simultaneously. This was followed by a part-time residency at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh, where I was again able to develop ambitious large-scale paintings alongside the everyday activities of a busy school. Both experiences allowed me to work at a scale that would have been difficult in my own rather more modest studio, which increasingly became a place for developing smaller paintings, drawings and ideas. Moving between these different spaces has made me think more carefully about how and where I work, and has certainly highlighted some of the limitations of my own studio, particularly when it comes to accommodating the larger paintings I seem increasingly determined to make!
