2021 Dwell: Drawings
Drawing has always been the starting point for my paintings, and Dwell was no exception. I spent a good deal of time trying to work out the layouts of buildings I hadn’t visited for decades, piecing together remembered rooms, staircases, corridors and gardens. Some drawings were fairly straightforward reconstructions, while others became increasingly elaborate architectural inventions. I rather enjoyed the detective work involved, although memory is not always a particularly reliable witness. These drawings helped establish the structures of the paintings, leaving plenty of room for things to change once I started applying colour.
