2021 Dwell: Sketchbooks

My sketchbooks are where most of the thinking, remembering and general messing about takes place. For Dwell, they became a mixture of architectural plans, thumbnail compositions, lists of places, fragments of autobiography and ideas that sometimes went nowhere. I would often start with a particular building or remembered event and see what else it brought to mind. One memory had a habit of leading to another, sometimes taking me quite a long way from where I had intended to go. Looking back through these pages, it’s interesting to see how some rather modest scribbles eventually developed into quite complicated paintings.
